Which Types of Insurance Plans Are Available Through Cigna?

The exact types of plans available to you will depend on several factors, including your state of residence, employer (if your insurance is obtained through your employer) vs an individual plan purchased through the Affordable Care Act, and qualification for healthcare funded by the government such as Medicaid and Medicare.

Additionally, Cigna’s health insurance plans vary from Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans, Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plans, and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO) plans. HMO plans typically have a limited number of providers within Cigna’s network, whereas EPO plans have a wider network of providers but with fewer service/treatment options, and PPO plans have a large network of facilities and healthcare providers to choose from with oftentimes lower out-of-pocket costs when the service is in-network.

Cigna offers four types of insurance plans through the Healthcare.gov Marketplace  – Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Bronze plans have the lowest premium amounts but receive the least amount of coverage when it comes to medical treatment, including addiction treatment (typically providing 10% coverage of costs for in-network facilities). Platinum plans have a higher premium amount but provide more coverage (typically 90% coverage for in-network facilities).

Most of their insurance plans do have copays for services, which will vary depending on the specific plan you select.

Their plans also have varying deductibles and coinsurance amounts for alcohol rehab facilities and addiction treatment services based on the plan you select. It’s important to review your insurance documents carefully before enrolling in a plan.

Will Receiving Treatment at an Alcohol Rehab Facility Cause My Insurance Premium to Increase?

No. In fact, it is illegal for any insurance provider within the U.S. to increase insurance premium rates due to receiving treatment at an alcohol rehab facility.

Do I Need a Referral From My Primary Care Physician To Receive Substance Abuse Treatment?

Most likely. Depending on your Cigna plan, you will probably need a referral from your PCP to receive coverage for services provided at an addiction treatment facility for both inpatient and outpatient services.

Affordable Care Act and Behavioral Health Treatment

If you’re worried about how you’re going to pay for addiction treatment coverage, know that the Affordable Care Act made it mandatory for insurance companies to provide coverage for alcohol addiction treatment and other mental health conditions. As a result, you might have improved access to behavioral health treatment. This includes Medicaid, Medicare, private coverage, military insurance, and state health insurance.
